Nestled within the Corsican landscape, this cottage renovation embraces the vernacular architecture of Corse through a careful and respectful intervention rooted in the site’s existing character. Built with local stone and guided by traditional construction principles, the project seeks to preserve the spirit of the original dwelling while adapting it to contemporary living needs.
The intervention includes the renovation of the existing roof, a reorganization of the interior layout, and the addition of two new bedrooms. Rather than imposing a new object onto the site, the extension is conceived as a discreet volume partially embedded into the terrain. Positioned between the existing house and a pre-existing separation wall bordering the neighboring property, the addition minimizes its visual impact and integrates naturally into the topography.
Materiality plays a central role in the project. The palette draws from traditional earthy materials — stone, wood, and mineral finishes — reinforcing continuity with the local architectural language. The approach favors minimum intervention and limited excavation, allowing the natural terrain and existing vegetation to remain largely untouched. Particular attention was given to preserving the mature trees and maintaining the balance between architecture and landscape.
A new pergola extends the living spaces outward, framing views and filtering natural light. Located in front of the house, it establishes a transitional outdoor room that mediates between the architecture and the landscape. Together, the pergola and the house define a clear entrance sequence to the property, creating both openness and intimacy.
The project consists of a 50 m² existing structure, complemented by a 25 m² addition and an 18 m² pergola, resulting in a modest yet carefully calibrated intervention that honors the identity of the place while gently extending its possibilities.
